Belly Dance and Your Health

From the beginning, like two branches of the same vine, Belly Dance and women's health are intertwined. That statement may be even more true today. Thousands of years after it's development, Belly Dance is one of the best ways for the women of today to achieve a better overall level of health.

Most scholars believe Belly Dance to be one of the earliest dance styles to be developed by humankind. Many also agree it's origins centered around one of women's most basic health concerns... childbirth.

Our ancient sisters believed the slow, sensuous movement would ensure conception while the powerful abdominal movement would ensure successful delivery. As it turns out, it does. (It is interesting to note here one definition of the word fitness is "the ability to reproduce"). Practiced as a ritual, Belly Dance most likely played an important role in mental health as well. And though they may not have known it, our ancient sisters realized health benefits far beyond those of physical and spiritual preparation for childbirth.

Research shows dance can improve flexibility, strength, and endurance, all vital components of fitness and health. Experts also tell us one of the biggest issues surrounding fitness and health is maintaining a fitness regime.

Women begin Belly Dancing for various reasons. Some to lose weight, others to improve their self esteem, and yet others just for the sheer fun of it! They continue for reasons as well. Belly Dancers often report they have achieved their desired goal and unexpected benefits, including better mental and physical health. They also report they stay involved with Belly Dance because it's FUN!

Regardless of why they begin or what they acheive, women from all walks of life, of every age, shape and size are improving their health by practicing and continuing to practice, this wonderful art form.
